What's the story?
The bungalow located at No. 4, Jalan Kuala Garing is the last surviving heritage building in the fast-growing township of Rawang.
The Sino-Malay- Palladian design wooden bungalow was built by the British mining company known famously Anglo-Oriental (Malaya) Ltd a subsidiary of the Anglo-Oriental Mining Corporation (later to become known as the London Tin Corporation).
The early occupants of the sprawling 6 bedroom bungalow were the colonial management staff of Rawang Tin Fields Co. Ltd (later known as Berjuntai Tin Dredging Bhd) until 1958. The last occupant was a British accountant before Mr. Nika Singh Sidhu purchased it in March, 1959 for 3,500 Malayan Dollars.
He moved in with his family of 12 in 1959. The Sidhu Brar family is synonymous with the heritage bungalow as 4 generations of the family have been living in it since with a total of 21 marriages solemnised at the premises with 32 children born and raised there.
The Sidhu Brar family have gone through a decade-long legal battle with the land leaseholders, Associated Pan Malaysia Cement Sdn Bhd (APMC) and Lafarge Malaysia Bhd and having lost all legal avenues, the heritage bungalow has a looming deadline of September 20, 2017 for demolition by Lafarge Malaysia Bhd a member for largest cement producer in the world; LafargeHolcim.
The plight of the family to save the bungalow has gone viral through Social Media and the Press with a plea to the Selangor State Government to intervene. On the Federal level, the family hopes that the Ministry of Tourism and Culture can help do its part in gazetting the bungalow as a heritage and tourism site.
